    The Gneisenau

This ship was launched in 1936, yet it does not seem to be out dated. It has a very sleek design.

Right, Peter, and both the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau looked even 'sleeker' after their refits in 1939 prior to going into service. The old-fashioned bow and straight smokestack were replaced with a clipper-style "Atlantic bow" and the stack was angled -- all of which gave these mighty warships a smooth, forward-looking appearance. The original bow made these ships look like the older Deutschland-class 'armored ships.'

    Thanks for this reminder! Cheers,

    Br. James
