Anyone know who this man was? What was he attached to? Thanks

Looks like he was a member of Infanterie-Regiment 17 or Kavallerie-Regiment 13 ("Braunschweiger")... see skull on his cap. Can´t really see whats on his shoulder boards.

I agree, looks very much like "17".

so there you have it: The picture shows an Oberleutnant (first lieutenant) of Infanterie-Regiment 17, bearing the traditional insignia of the "Braunschweiger" (Brunswickers) on his visor!
