SS Death (Remembrance) Card with Heer breast eagle ??

Does anyone know why an army breast eagle was poorly added to the SS-Sturmmann's Death Card photo, before is was sent to print.

It could not be to hide the fact that he was SS. His SS collar tab and rank are printed on the card still. They list as SS-Sturmmann.

The head is taken from another photo and crudely (well done at the time!) added to a painted body.

Obviously the rememberance card maker wasn't as clued up on uniforms as we are here.

I think you are right. I looks like one of those photos that you take at a fair. You stand behind a backdrop of something and stick your head in for a picture.

        Hi,

I believe that some death cards were made in this way, particularly when bereaved families had no photographs of their deceased relatives in uniform.
A pre-armed forces photo was found, sent to the printer and "matched up" with a uniformed body.
You find this type of tampering in several instances on photos.
Awards are "painted in" to earlier photos to reflect their latest award status, which appears crude to the modern eye.
SS personnel would on occasion wear Heer breast eagles, usually on the arm as many were former Heer soldiers and possibly wanted to keep on tradition.
I think your card is a head matched to the wrong uniform by a printer trying to please a bereaved family as quickly as possible.

        Best wishes,

        john.

This card in better condition is for sale on the estand.

Did you get them from the same source?
