- le. und s. MG : that is : leichtes respectively schweres MG 34.
(The schwere MG 34 (heavy MG) is the same weapon but mounted on a tripod
for longer range and better control). Pictures here :

- battle calendar 1940 : Durchbruch zum Aermelkanal und Schlacht in Flandern und im Artois
p. 22 says "Uffz. befördert", so yes, promoted to Unteroffizier, but an unusal way to enter it.
