Note that the peasants have their own weapons.

Here's a nice early winter image of a Luft MG platoon. DD helmets and DLV buckles. Most guys have their gas masks out and hanging from the neck. The assistant gunner (kneeling on right side of MG) is wearing a bandoleer around his neck.
