    Hi Andy

The french word négociant is for merchant or dealer !
Bomme Moitry is maybe the name of this dealer because these words are not used in the French language ?
If you have a photo of this sign to share, we can check that

    Regards

      Hi,

on a genealogy website there is a couple married in 1860 :

      http://gw.geneanet.org/libekade?lang...ocz=0&m=AM&v=2

Charles BOMME et Françoise MOITRY, en 1860

"Bomme Moitry Négociant" could be some infact one of the children from this couple, or a children of one children of this couple.

      See You

Hmm! any Idea where the photo was taken or the time-frame
'bomme' in Quebec French has a few meanings usually meaning 'Couple'

It if was Normandy could be a local-ism

Ok so not Normandy (Germans never made it there is WW1) I would go with 'novedvory' and 'FrenchVolunteer' take on it

              Hi,

this picture is clearly taken in occupied France :

              - Alsace / Lorraine between 1871 to 1918

              and/or

              - occupied north-east of France between 1914 to 1918

              See You

Vince....I thought Alsace/Lorraine was part of Germany from 1871-1918? My mother is from Metz, my grandfather was born there in 1911 as a German, and my great grandfather was from there and served in the German army during WWI with the Lothringen Regiment.

                Regards,

                Patrick

                  Hi all,
I think that this picture were shot in occupied Belgium or in a north France area.
Not in Alsace neither in Lorraine, especially because during the 1871/1918 period, inscriptions on the panel at this time would have been be automatically written in German.

                  For example: Négociant => Händler

                    Hi,

french inscriptions can still be seen in occupied Alsace-Lorraine, especially in the first years, or in the last years (when german political administration tried to be less germanic than before to try to keep the Alsace-Lorraine in the Reich).

But you are right, i think that this picture may have been taken in the area north of Nancy, i found a "Moitry" in this location.

                    See You
