    Looking for Eugen Hanke!

Well....it is a complete long shot but nothing ventured nothing gained.

My uncle died during the war. That is all I know.

    His name was Eugen Hanke.

I think...but don't know for certain...that he was KIA somewhere in the East given he was born in Poland. I think he would have been 20 or 21.

If anyone happens to have his photo...I would love a copy of it. Thanks for entertaining my long shot!

p.s. There is likely more than one soldat by that name but I may be able to recognize him if I see him.

Thank you! I can give that a try!

It would be interesting to know if there's any info about him.

I'm really not holding out much hope for a photo...but you never know.

Wow! I think you found him!

He was my mother's oldest brother...so the ages work (I just thought he was a little younger)...

But yes...he would have been born in Ozorkow! I don't suppose there would have been more than one Eugen Hanke that it could be?

You made my day! Thank you!

I was in Budapest a few years ago...so close!

In general among all soldier listed in the Volksbund list as KIA or MIA there are only two with

the name Eugen Hanke. The other one listed the place of birth does not fit.

Now you can ask for more information about him in Berlin (WASt).

I think I found the cemetery on-line...at least a photo of it...

This is just wonderful! I owe you a beer Gerdan!

I was only a child when my mother told me about him...and she was only a child when he went off to war...so what I have in my head might not be accurate.

She did say he went missing early on in the war...but if he died in 1945 - that doesn't mesh. Is that even possible? Could they have not known? Or, is it likely just miscommunication? - which is fine. If he's found...and I'm pretty sure that must be him...I'm content.

                FreeRange,

if you will contact the WASt in Berlin they can exactly give you the missing information you need

may be also details about his end in Sarosd.

Thanks for the beer, if I come to see Canada I will contact you.

Wish you a happy New Year

                Gerdan
