      Great grouping, i'd say he was still in the heer when he got the minesweeper badge

          Well now, that is a combination you do not see every day. Yes, he was serving onboard a craft in the Ostsee under Sicherungsdivision 9. Not as a Maat, but Gefreiten! During Dez., 1944 the unit was directed to support operations along the Pommeranian, Kurland and Ost Preußen coasts. He had previously served in the Ukraine as a trained landungs Pioneer. So such an assignment to the Kriegsmarine although odd does make some sense with regard to the operations being conducted at the time in those late war locations. More below.

              Without the other docs, the minesweeper seems like a regular KM doc as they didn't always include 'matrosen' in the rank. ie. matrosen-gefreiter

              You sometimes see LW personell getting KM decorations and KM getting LW, but Heer getting KM is really very unusual indeed.
