Familien Chronik - with SS Ahnentafel

Here is one of the last things I found before leaving Germany. A really big and very well made Familien Chronik. It has never been written in. I am familiar with the booklet size Ahnenpass, but I have never seen anything quite like this. It contains great illustration throughout, just a few shown here. Also has a large fold section; SS Ahnentafel. Again completely blank, no entries.

Can anyone offer any thoughts on this?

The paper quality is also very high as well as the printing. I can get some better photos outside where I have better light if anyone needs to see more

Looks like a very nice condition original piece from publisher Emmerich. (publisher information adjacent to the 'Vorwort' page. Thanks for showing!

Does it have any SS specific pages (not the Ahnentafel) on the parchment paper?

Format and the pages you show so far seem to be of a type that as far as I know came in black and red, a seemingly generic type without runes and without specific printed, from the publisher SS information (apart from your SS-Ahnentafel) With such a generic book an SS family could for example add the SS=Ahnentafel to suit.

All the pages shown match a red version that I have, red leather with gold writing on the cover. I would assume this red colour combination would likely be for a NS party family due to the colour and that it has no specific SS pages in it.

Other black and obviously SS specific versions were available with SS runes on the cover and even with runes and personalised with the family name.

These are my thoughts based on owning black and red examples, not precise documentation to tell us what they were meant for. At this time I don't know if just being a black version with the same pages as the red is enough to call it SS or not as we I don't know what they were originally meant for. Perhaps all the black ones came with SS Ahnentafel, a possibilty, but it is not known for sure. All of these books could be customised by addition or removal of documents to suit the family and of course could be done at any time. I had a lovely SS (with runes) version which was used all the way up to the 60's!

So far I've not seen a black one without runes that has any printed, from the Chronik's publisher specific SS information, to tell us more precisely that its SS, only as with yours, an SS Ahnentafel which was an SS form not specific to SS Familien Chronik. Perhaps another collector can show such a piece, ie no runes on the cover but obvious SS content in there as it came from the publisher.

These are not very common items and we have only information from the actual pieces in collections, there is no doubt a lot more to learn. Perhaps an Emmerich catalogue survives somewhere which will tell us more precisely?
