Great shot Dog, I had not seen one of these backwoods limos before. interesting the choice of place to mount the spare tire, kind of takes away the ground clearance advantage. I would have moved it elsewhere if I were forced to drive one of these around so as not to have it hang up when in a hurry getting out of trouble!

I believe the thinking behind the siting of the spare was to act as an auxiliary axel and help to eliminate the possibility of "bellying out" on rough ground. The ground clearance is still reasonable, so with an engine at each end, the lightweight car could, in theory, be extracted from most situations. The front- and rear-mounted engines could be engaged individually, front wheel or rearwheel drive, or in concert for 4x4 performance. A bit of over-engineering which never caught on and few of these interesting cars were ever made, the bulk of production going for export. A very few were used by the Wehrmacht and Grenz troops.
