Quite an exciting display of the great ship! This photo must have been taken during her sea trials in 1939, after which she had her bow replaced with a clipper bow known as an "Atlantic bow," which made her more stable during high seas. What an elegant photo!

      The Scharnhorst

Yes, you are right about the design of this magnificent ship: I never understood the reason that this ship was not part of a battle group. The Bismark and the Graf Spee fought alone too, against the older outdated Britsh fleet.

This picture taken over seventy years ago, shows that the design has stood the test of time. The Scarnhorst does not appear to be completely out dated.

          Peter.

The Graf Spee was used as a commerce raider, that's why she operated alone and the Bismarck operated with the Prinz Eugen, their mission was to be against the Atlantic convoys with specific orders not to engage warships of similar or greater strength.

Scharnhorst, during her final mission operated With the 4th destroyer flotilla, Tirpitz couldn't join her as she was too badly damaged after the x-Craft attack in sept., she was the only other Capital ship available to operate against the Arctic convoys.
