    Does anyone here collect manuals?

    Hi All,

I was wondering how many of you collect manuals as I rarely see posts on them and I guess they belong under this forum.
Is it simply a collection or do you use them for research?
Do you have a source that you consistently return to?

Right, there are some but not many. I do collect and use some of them for my research.

What kind of manuals are you looking into?

      Hello Allan:
Interesting question. I used to look thru piles of vintage
US manuals at my local military vehicle meets, and never
could resist buying them at the flea market. I have noted
some recent selling restrictions on same via online auction,
so it appears that their status is unclear regarding the
current collecting market for these publications.

(below) My favorite manuals are about flags - go figure, right.
"The 1904 Army Regulations ...specified in article 227 that
silk colors were to be carried in battle.
      [and] ...bunting national
colors carried during peacetime drills. The 1911 Infantry Drill
Regulations, however, stipulated in article 773 that when the
battalion takes battle formation, the color guard (with the colors)
joins the regimental reserve. Previous editions of the drill
regulations stipulated that the colors were posted in the center
of the regimental line. The 1918 U.S. Navy Landing Force Manual,
which also governed Marine operations, contains the same info."

Hi All, thanks for your responses. I am by no means a collector by intent, but it seems that I have become one out of necessity. Of photographs as well.
Many years ago I was trying to research 2cm Flak and realized how inaccurate and inconsistent the published information was, so decided to turn to original sources to compile the information myself.
Along the way I've encountered many collectors and enthusiasts who are seeking similar information (very few who are willing to share what they have), have travelled far and wide studying surviving examples and learnt more than I imagined.
Unfortunately, I'm still missing a few of the manuals from each set. and it would be nice to eliminate this frustration before I die.
The aim isn't even necessarily to own them, but just have access to obtain quality copies. ( hi res scans) in order to be able to offer those interested with the information as a whole, without the frustration.

              Grüß Di' Allen,

I've always been interested in manuals. As a mountain troop collector, I've been collecting both military and period civilian mountaineering and skiing manuals, along with various mountain gear and weapons manuals. I use a lot of the imagery from manuals for displays and to explain things to the public.

Well nice to see that there are some of us about. It has always amazed me that these original manuals haven't been more thoroughly reproduced considering the absence of so much of their information amongst the multitude of published books.
Aside from period photos of specific details, the following is my current list of manuals for which I'm searching. Most being more of what I'd consider 'supplementary' and would just make nice additions, the 'bold' ones are the those which I'm missing from the basic sets for either the 2cm Flak 30 or Flak 38.
If anyone knows where I might gain access to any of these I'd be very keen to hear from them. Along with anyone else who happens to collect photos of Leichte Flak.

Sorry, can’t help you with the Flak interests. Ref. the comment on greater reproductions, let’s face it, most English speaking collectors can read German. That being said, there are some good sources of information in English; I’d suggest US Army reports on equipment (intelligence summaries), doctrine and standard table of organization.

You are Korrekt on us Amis, we usually don't know any other language (that old canard "speak English or Die" and lack of elementary school foreign language funding have a lot to do with it).

Do you know some good US manuals on Doctrine, especially SS doctrine? -and especially SS indoctrination? I have found such things to not be so readily available in my experience.
                      Gruss Gott

                        Dan,

As Michael has pointed out, unfortunately many collectors and enthusiasts, like myself, are not fluent in German. I can get by and with only a little effort understand a particular text, but unfortunately it doesn't come as easily as I'd like. Thankfully I find my understanding much better when I'm there, but unfortunately this isn't the issue.
I have originals of the US TMs on Flak and German Light Artillery Field emplacements and reprints on the British evaluations.
There's quite a few issues when referring to these in that they're mostly inaccurate or have concentrated their emphasis on limited areas of a weapon. Optical devices is always problematic. eg. US TM E 9-228 2-cm Flakvierling 38 covers the Flakvierling in the first half and the 2cm Flak 30 in the second. Stating that their sighting equipment was the same ie Flakvisier 35 for Flakvierling 38.

Michael, the only thing that I've ever read on SS Doctrine or indoctrination is Jay Hatheway's 'In perfect Formation'. I have never come across any vorschriften on the subject but then again, I've never looked.

Patrick, I don't think I've even come across the title of the manual for the 2cm Gebirgsflak 38.
The only main reference that I have for it is in the British Evaluation reprints by Naval & military Press. Scattered reference elsewhere but nothing outstanding or even concrete.

                        Cheers
                        Allan

Patrick, I was just looking through a 1944 copy of 'Verzeichnis der Dienstvorschriften un Druckschriften der Luftwaffe' for some thing unrelated and came across
                          D(L)T 1040/1 2cm Gebirgsflak 38
                          D(L)T 1040/ 2-4 2cm Gebirgsflak 38: Verlasten
                          D(L)T 1040/5 2cm Gebirgsflak 38: Sonderaustattung

Also wondering if anyone knows the significance of the strip, or absence of, on the cover of each manual.

                          Cheers

                              Hi Ed,

That has long been a good site to refer to but unfortunately he doesn't have most of them available for sale, and I've never had any response inquiring about those that are.
I have a number of photosopies that were sourced for me from the Koblenz Archives but I'm not sure where to find these myself. Plus the fact that, being photocopies, the quality is generally fairly poor.
