wooden plate - berchtesgaden

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. I've been told this was made in the 30's. Any thoughts on this? Is the writing in "old" German? I've been told by Germans their language changed over the years. It reads " give us this day".

On the back is engraved " berchtesgaden".

"Give us this day our daily bread" is the inscription in an old print called Fraktur similar to old English lettering. I cannot comment on the exact date of the plate but it appears to be a usual carved souvenir type of item.

This is a very common inscription on German plates: wooden, ceramic, pewter, etc. I've seen a lot of these, if not one quite so ornate. The woodcarvers' art was (and is) very widely practiced in the Berchtesgaden area - still very popular with tourists today. (I dropped a few hundred $ on carved and painted wooden items when I was there last month for the Christmas Market.)

Nice looking plate. Having trained under a Bavarian Woodcarving Master for 6 years, plus having a collection of Gebirgsjäger related woodcarvings, it looks like your plate is a period piece based on your single photo.

Those are beautiful carvings. I assume you trained in Germany? I wish my plate had a swastika so it would be easier to date.

Basically, “we give thanks for our daily bread” – we is implied, a very common in Catholic regions of Germany and Austria.
