        Hello Michael,

Very attractive document with a very beautiful photography of his holder.

Obertruppführer is a rank of non-commissioned officer.

The localization of the units appears on stamps :

        Standarte R 59 Verden (R = Reserve)

        Sturm 24 / R59 Bassum

Verden and Bassum are two locality of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen).

        Cordial greetings.

        Polux

The Bestätigung adds a nice touch. The number and width of the lower arm stripes indicate his time in service of the SA.

Jeff is correct, of course: the two wide and one narrow sleeve rings this person wears on his Traditions Brown Shirt indicate that he joined the SA in 1926. He is also wearing a Traditions Commemorative Badge of the Stahlhelm Bund -- he was a WWI vet -- on his Brown Shirt, which means that the photo was taken at some time between November 13, 1933 (the introduction of the Stahlhelm Bund Commemorative Badge) and November 14, 1935 (when Dr. Wilhelm Frick, Minister of the Interior, issued an order prohibiting any further awards of this traditions badge and permitting only the newly-created 22mm NSDFBSt membership badge to be worn on civilian clothes). But by the end of 1935, the whole of the Stahlhelm Bund organization had been absorbed into the SA.

What seems just a bit odd is that this person had belonged to the SA for at least eight years by the time this photo was taken, and yet he only held the rank of a senior NCO -- what we would call a master sergeant. Perhaps he was not 'upwardly mobile?!'
