    Afrika Korps Death card

    Hello,,

I am looking for help with an Afrika Korps Death card that I recently purchased from Germany.. It arrived yesterday and as I have never had one of these before I didn't really know what to expect.. I had assumed these would be printed on some sort of card stock, but on opening the envelop I found it to be just a simple double sided piece of thin paper.. Measuring the black border I found it to be 9.5 CM long and 6.0 CM across ..

The mans name is " Ignaz Langeder " died 23 Dezember 1941..

Have look at the images below and I would appreciate your opinions on originality and it would also be great if someone would be kind enough to translate into English for me... Thanks

    Cheers
    Paul ...

            Hello Gerdan, Pietro and Gehrmann,

Thank you for taking the time to trace and translate Ignaz Langeder's death card.. When one can read these cards there certainly is a lot of information to be found on the fallen soldier, well worth collecting

Can anyone tell me is there a way of testing the paper to validate the period and year of print ?

It would also be great if other death card collectors would like to post their tropical cards,, I believe there could be a 2nd version printed on some sort of card stock?

            Regards
            Paul ...

              Hi Paul

The death cards were made to print by the family, more than one,
to be given to other relatives or friends.
I've seen different type of papers, rough or smooth.
The death cards printed during the war often have the swatiska and references to a'' death for Germany, the Fuhrer etc.'' The family also printed the death cards after the war without swastika or references to the past regime.

              Some examples from my collection.
The first is printed in a rough paper and was printed during the war.

This was printed in a very smooth paper, but an original one.
A soldier of the 278 ID.

Unfortunately I don't have any DAK cards related.

I know that there are some fakes death cards, I've never seen one... but I think generally are from SS or high decorate soldier..

                  Hi Pietro,,

Thank you for your quick response with the 2 different type paper examples from your own collection.. Can you confirm my size measurement between the black boarders (9.5 CM long and 6.0 CM across) or can Death Cards be found printed up in many different sizes ? This is starting to be a rather interesting field to collect

                  Thanks

                    You're welcome, Paul!
Yes, this is a very interesting field... I agree with you.

Generally the misure of a page is 10,5 x 6,5 cm. But there are different sizes!

Best Regards and greetings from Italy

                        Thank you Pietro,

My measurement was taken from black boarder to black boarder, if the complete DC is measured from side to side it comes in at 6.5 cm x 11.0 cm but as you say there seems to be a lot of different sizes, shapes and card/paper types ..

Also thank you Kevin for the rather interesting 13 page WH link, took me a while to read through all the postings but it made very interesting reading in-deed

This is fast becoming a very compelling thread, lets keep it going

                        All the best from NZ

                          Hi Paul.
Here some another example from my collection.
Various type of print, size, with one or two pages.

The first is in one page.
The second two page with and an image of a sepolture, the first I see.
The second two Brother.... I saw death cards... made for 3/4 Brothers.... I think at the family of this guy.... very sad ...
