He was awarded the 1st class IC and by that stage was holding the rank of SS-Obersturm. in mid-January 1942 (source - Mooney. WSS Knights, Vol.2). But on this photo is march 1943 and SS-Untersturm.
Here atother photo with SS-Obersturm. Beer from KG Kunstmann in the same place. Here you can see his rank. It's definitly not Riefkogel, but another officer who looks like him.

Really nice shot. Thank you Yerdna for this!

Pitchellis photo signed in Charles Trang book about Totenkopf, and photos of KG Kunstmann I saw in different books: G.Bernage "Charkow 1943", J.Restayn "Battle of Kharkow", Trang "Totenkopf". If you need more photos of battle group that I can send to e-mail. I wait for Email address by private message.

Yes, that is Grossrock in both cases. Next to him, in the dismounted photo, is II./SS-PR 5 commander Alois Reicher. The photos are by Alois Jarolim. He photographed the well-known exercise of II./SS-PR 5. Jarolim was with Gille, Dorr and Hack on a hill watching it, and after photographing those senior officers, took pictures of the tanks in the distance. Jarolim then went to the tanks and filmed them up close, with supporting Heer infantry, and then photographed the Heer infantry pretend to occupy Soviet strongpoints. The full sequence even shows Hiwis who were being coached on how to act the part of prisoners!

I'm not sure if all this is shown on the website, but the pics are on his contact sheets and I scanned several dozen of them on my two trips to NARA. They'll be in volume 2 of my Germanic Waffen-SS project.
