    Hi Frank,

Something doesn't match here, and perhaps that is what you're calling attention to! Checking through the DALs, I find no reference to any SS officer whose name is spelled "Hildenbrand" in any edition. However, SS #10528 does bring a match, though it is to an SS officer named Paul Helle. Helle appears in most of the DALs from 1934 onward, depending on his rank and the span of the edition; in the October 1, 1934 edition Helle held the rank of SS-Obersturmführer, and in the last edition in which his name is listed -- that of October 1, 1944 -- Helle held the rank of SS-Sturmbannführer. At that time he had just turned 45 years of age.

Hope this is helpful to you.

One further note: Paul Helle was promoted to the rank of SS-Sutrmbannführer on April 20, 1937, so he obviously did not hold the rank of SS-Obersturmführer in 1943.

You could be wrong there. I haven't checked the DAL, but it's quite possible for someone to hold the Allgemeine-SS rank of Sturmbannführer and the Waffen-SS rank of Obersturmführer simultaneously in 1943.

That's quite interesting, Max. How would that show up in the DALs? Helle is listed as an SS-Sturmbannführer in the 1.10.44 edition.

It looks to me as if the number is the Feldpost number.

              Br. James,
Usually as a Reserve officer. For example, SS-Gruppenführer Paul Moder was a SS-Sturmbannführer in the Waffen-SS. In fact, he was KIA in that rank.
