    ww2 propaganda pics.

    hello people
i have recently been sold a german propaganda book ,this book is made up of pictures taken during the war and has some very good scenes ,all of which show
the german view of things.there is nothing bad in them that would allarm the general public of germany ,these pics have been taken by the company photographers, and they have been chosen and collated into a large book ,with each pic there is a brief description of the picture written in german and each one is numbered ,there is around 80 large pics, the book is like a scrap book.
crudely put together as a presentation type book ,it was reputedly taken from the office of geobels the proparganda minister ,i have been told it was the type of book where the propaganda guys would look at each pic and then decide what one would be used in the magazines of papers of the times.
now what i need to know is, as i hold the ownership of the book, could i copy the pics and republish them in a similar type of book but with modern and english translations.

Hi Les, welcome to the forum, nice to see another new member, and re-enactor, from England join

In answer to your question I would say "no". The problem is that the copywrite of the original photos belongs to the photograher who took the pictures. I realise that many may now well be dead, or the copywrite may have lapsed, but there is always the chance that you could find yourself in breach of copywrite. You really need expert help on this but those are my initial thoughts.

Hope it is of some help?

    Cheers, Ade.

I suggest you contact a lawyer experienced in copyright law. The liklihood of NS wartime publications being under current copyright is doubtful. With the end of the war, concerns about the legal protections of copyright for NS publications was not of paramount concern. Contrary to the opinion ventured above, the Kriegsberichter employed by Propaganda Kompanie were not afforded the protection of copyright as that was reserved for their employer, the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht.

Again, if you really want to pursue the issue, I urge you not to listen to hobbyists such as me. Seek the sage advise of someone who is in the know!!

      Welcome to the Forum!!
