I've posted this photo here in a couple of WAF sections, but (as of this writing) have had no luck identifying the branch of service of these lads or the type / model of rifle they are carrying (my knees get sore just looking at the 'PT' going on in the background ). Who are these fellows - SA (Police) ??? Volkssturm ??? Freikorps Sauerland ??? Definitely a late-war photo (note the different styles of footwear / overcoats etc.), but other then that, I'm drawing blanks here.....all information / opinions most welcome....

You are on the right track, they are some local defense unit. Standschutzen would be my guess.
