    Do 17 / Do 217 ID Assistance....

I just picked up this superb little photo of a shot-down Do 17 (or possibly a Do 217) with it's (camouflaged) fuselage and tail riddled with bullet holes. The markings on the fuselage are 4N+ KL.

Can anyone possibly ID this plane and it's fate ???

    Many Thankx...

        Hello,

The aircraft is a Dornier Do17P-1 of 3. Staffel (Fern)/Aufklärungsgruppe 22. This would be the 3rd Squadron (long-range) Reconnaissance Group 22. The fuselage code '4N' denotes Aufklärungsgruppe 22 and the letter 'L' denotes the 3rd Staffel. The letter 'K' is the aircraft's individual code within the Staffel.

This aircraft went down during the battle of France on June 5, 1940. Both engines were badly damaged in attacks by S/L More and F/O Kain in Hawker Hurricanes of No.73 Squadron. The aircraft crash-landed near Reims. The crew of three: (pilot) Leutnant Wilhelm Telge; (observer) Feldwebel Walther Rössler; and (flight engineer) Obergefreiter Josef Heims were all unhurt and subsequently captured. Prior to their capture, they fired the aircraft to prevent it from falling into enemy hands.

Looks like the swastika from the tail fin was removed by "souvenir hunters".

Information on this aircraft can be found in:

The Battle of France- Then and Now, by Peter D Cornwell

        Best regards,
        Tom

The pilot of this aircraft, Wilhelm Telge, was killed later in the war in an aerial collision. He ended up flying night fighters and was credited with 12 victories before his death.

          Here is his career summary:

Notice his assignment to 3.(F)/Aufklärungsgruppe 22

TELGE, Wilhelm. (DOB: 11.03.18 in Braunschweig). (n.d) in 3.(F)/Aufkl.Gr. 22. 15/16.10.42 Oblt. in
          4./NJG 1. 26.05.43 Oblt., with 5./NJG 1. 25.06.43 Oblt., in 4./NJG 1. 01.07.43 Oblt., appt Staka
          5./NJG 1 (to 01.09.43 - KIA). 23.08.43 Oblt., awarded the Ehrenpokal. 01.09.43 in NJG 1, promo to
          Hptm. (Tr.O.). 30.08/01.09.43 Hptm., 5./NJG 1 KIA - Bf 110 G-4 (G9+AN) collided with a bomber SW
of Berlin - crashed between Juchendorf and Beuthen. Buried at Völpke-Badeleben. Credited with 12
          victories

The spelling in the link a few posts up is incorrect. The pilot's name was Telge, not Felge. There was no Luftwaffe Officer by the name of Felge in WW2.

          Best regards,
          Tom

Really, really appreciate the effort(s) made here guys......at the time of purchase, I sure didn't think that this photo would in anyway whatsoever be associated with the famous RAF Airman "Cobber Kain", the first RAF air ace of the Second World War....

It's amazing how many doors of the past are opened by a photograph.

                  Great pic.

Through good fortune, was able to obtain two more private and (as far as I know) unpublished photos of this famous 'Cobber' 4N + KL related victory (both of which which will probably not stay in my PawSS too long.......love the angle of the first shot - ....
