    Kreigsmarine (Death?) Certificate?

    Hey,

Got this yesterday for free while sorting through a pile of old books and scraps at a local antique store. The owner " wants nothing to do with it". Unfortunately the eagle has been decapitated so...yeah.

My best guess given my introductory German is that its some type of death notice but I may be and am likely wrong.

Anyway, the stamp is obviously kriegsmarine but its attributed to the 17th flotilla and I've hit a dead end on research on the 17th. I also wouldn't mind knowing who signed it.

    Any help is appreciated.

I found your guy in the Volksbund list:

    Georg Rauh

Georg Rauh resting on the cemetery in Byaasen / Trondheim-Havstein.

    Endgrablage: Reihe 25 Grab 46A

    Nachname: Rauh
    Vorname: Georg
    Dienstgrad: Oberbootsmannsmaat
    Geburtsdatum: 14.07.1916
    Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 02.08.1943

The document you bought is is an official document from the Kriegsmarine to honour in memory the Oberbootsmannsmaat KIA.

The signature should be made by Korvetten Kapitän Dr. Max Immich.

        COOL!

Thanks for the info guys, I'm still kind of stumped about the stamp though.

The translation I got was roughly "boat hunting flotilla" does this mean U boat?

Is there any way to determine what vessel he was on?

              Many thanks!

So I guess there's really no way of knowing what vessel he was on.

The only date I have associated is 2. august 1943 and none of those ships seem to have been removed from service at the time that correspond with the death notice leading me to believe he may have died of injuries that did not sink the ship.

This part is a long shot,

what would be the best avenue of of getting in touch with someone who could get a picture of this mans tombstone? I know it seems sort of silly being that I've only found this a couple days ago but it would be REALLY cool.

              Thanks for your help guys!

I think we have a couple of members that live in Trondheim or close by.

There are only 2 men buried at that cemetery who died on that day so either it was an accident or an air attack that didn't sink their boat.

I know a couple of people who will almost certainly know for certain what happened and on which boat they served, however they don't use this forum.

                  This is very exciting!

I hope that I'm not asking too much to get some leads on how it may be possible to get in touch with any of these people.

The prospects of obtaining a picture of this mans final resting place is an oddly creepy yet fulfilling answer to a piece of paper that would have been tossed out had I not shown some interest in it. This is the first time I've done this much research on something non Canadian and like I said I am very excited!

I don't expect this to come quickly or easily but as I am still more or less an amateur to collecting this might just turn out to be the most interesting piece I own!

Heres hoping I have some luck!

please feel free to PM me with any details, I have no issues putting my fair share of work and correspondence into this.....wow!

I'll PM you the details later. It may be that he was originally buried elsehwere, all the smaller german cemeteries were centralised in to 5 large ones in the fifties.

I have the war diaries of some flottillas operating in north norway but not the 17 UJ unfortunately. The boats they operated were trawlers and whalers fitted out for the job.
