My first reaction is the same as Alex and Russ. However, there were pine trees (are these vastly different from fir trees?) in and around Stalingrad. I attach a few images from my collection.

Photo 1 shows pine plantations north of Vertyachii (used for lumber by the Germans, so perhaps they were all cut down).
Photo 2 shows a half-track of 24.Pz.Div. moving past a pine tree nursery in southern Stalingrad.
Photo 3 shows pioneers from Pi.Btl.635 amongst baby pines/firs south-west of Orlovka.

Forgot to mention that fir/pine trees were also growing near Gorodishche. Soldiers from 305.Inf.Div. used branches as Christmas trees.

Hello, Jason. In all the photos - pine. (The branches grow upwards from the trunk). But do not fir. Under natural conditions, pine grows between Peskovatka and Kalach. Of course, sometimes there are man-made plantations. In an album typical fir-tree. Typical for a humid climate of average and northern part of Russia.
