Photo of Otto Ernst Remer in 1949

While browsing through a new photography book I came across this photo of Ernst Remer taken in 1949. It's interesting to see him holding a photo of himself when he held the rank of General. He doesn't look to happy and from what the Wikipedia bio states, he was an unrepentant National Socialist till his death in 1997. He was 85.

    ---------
Remer went on to command an expanded Führer Begleit Brigade (FBB), a field unit formed from a Grossdeutschland cadre, in East Prussia with little success. The brigade was then transferred to the west for the Ardennes Offensive, in December 1944, and again suffered high casualties for little gain.

In 1945, when the FBB was expanded to divisional status, he was promoted to Generalmajor (brigadier general), and appointed to command it. He was not considered a successful division commander, for when the FBD moved to Silesia in March 1945, Remer was criticised for lack of ability. He was eventually captured by American troops, and remained a prisoner until 1947.

Many hard years in those eyes - tired, and full of hatred, possibly?

Not only for the struggle for his Fatherland . . . but maybe even for all the emotions associated with suffering defeat, and all that which was delivered with it post-war.

Great photo - full of emotion!

ASIDE: Seen this before somewhere, I think???
