    1970's

Very nice photo ! He sent very few signed photos to collectors. I met him a couple times in the 1970's, and he had very little to say about his war days. He only attended a few OdR reunions as he told me "they were just a reminder of days better off forgotten" He did however sign a couple photos for me. Tom

Is there anything knwon about his pre Volkssturm service? I think he must´ve won his Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, his Infantry Assault Badge and Wound Badge earlier during the war. His two NSDAP Long Service Awards also denote some extensice party service.

I've never been able to find anything about his early combat days. His EK 1 & 2 were both 1939 type & he wears the SA Sports Badge for War Wounded which was implemented in 1940, so he was badly wounded before the Volkssturm days (1939-1944). I wish I would have asked him !!! Tom

So he was drafted into the Vollkssturm (and not regular army) because of his previous wounds?

He served in the Heer first and after recovering from wounds he enter the Volkssturm. I don't know the dates or how he was selected for Volkssturm service however. I do know one reason for this was combat veterans were in great need in these units. Tom

Because signed photo's from him are starting to be hard to find, I would say $55.00 to maybe $75.00. More if there is also an envelope & letter of course. Tom
