I never see any cover for rifle before, but is that what this rifle has?

Very interesting seldom seen cover ,but what has he got down the back of his trousers?

He is a Kradfahrer and to protect his rifle and optics(?) he uses a cover over it.
The "thing" at his back is just a fold of his Krad Mantel, he buttoned it up around his legs.
