    FRW. Legion Flandern SS art

Pen drawing made by "Frans Vanimmerseel" about the Flemish SS volunteers.

Van Immerseel was a famous artist before, and especially after the war. He was a cartoonist and painter before the war, and then joined the Flemish Legion raised by the Germans in 1941. He created many drawings and also took photographs in the frontlines. During 1943, he broke with the Germans, as did much of the VNV membership (the collaboration passed more towards the more extreme DeVlag movement).

Van Immerseel was prosecuted after the war, but his repentance and the quality of his artwork meant that his wartime "mistakes" were soon overlooked and swept under the rug. He became famous for his work in woodcuts and stained glass, while also illustrating books. Born in 1909, he died in 1978 as one of the most respected artists in Flanders, though perhaps not as highly regarded in Wallonia.

An internet search will bring up a lot of information on van Immerseel, sometimes with little mention of his time in the Waffen-SS, other times with a focus on it. This is because, along with Finn Wigforss, he was one of the best-known non-German artists in the Waffen-SS, and his drawings and recruiting posters are widely reproduced.

I agree that is a nice piece of artwork. The style is distinctive.

Would this also be a Van Immerseel?
