Festung Brest Marineartillerie Soldbuch & EK2 Urkunde

I want to show this remarkable award document, handed to a Marineartillerist in Festung Brest, just 8 days before the Festung capitulated. It is signed by Otto Kahler, who commanded the succesfull raider Thor before.

In addition some pages from his Soldbuch and his career description.

    Kind regards,

    Maurice

Not all Germans were so lucky to survive Brest. Here an example of a death notice for another Marine artillerist.

Thanks for your nice comments and the map!

I understood from another member that it should be this batterie:

The feldpost is 31184F so the F indicates the 6th battery and the map that H BABERT has posted on WAF shows that this battery was located at Le Portzic at the east of Brest. This is also very interessant because this Stützpunkt surrendered only at the end of the battle and Brechlin certainly took part in the fights to defend the fort which was located at this place.

He also sent me some photos from his collection, related to Brest. Nice to see a grave and a deathnotice united.

                      Furthermore, I found this:

'' A description by a German Army officer (343 Infanterie Division) of the fortified garrison at Brest, in French Brittany. There is a brief introduction, in which a short history of German Army activities in the region is discussed. The construction of the fortress is then described, as well as armliment, supplies, communications, and the garrison’s order of battle doctrine. The final section of the report details the encirclement of the garrison by Allied forces, and its eventual capture in September, 1944. ''

                      at this location http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a438113.pdf

The report is not always correct translated, but it gives a good insight in the experiences of one of the defenders. Many troops were already draw back from the Brest area to be deployed in Normandy after the invasion. There was not much left to defend the Festung. Also interesting are his remarks on the lack of concrete needed to construct the bunkers, since the resistance sabotaged the railways. For somebody who want to know more about the Atlantikwall and Festunge this report might be useful.

                      Have a nice weekend,

                      Maurice
