One Saturday I found this on the table of a German stamp collector's table. He also collected envelopes with feldpost stamps on them. He wanted to show me an evelope with a feldpost stamp from Stalingrad, and the letter inside. It was rather thick, and, when I removed the contents as he wanted me to do, not only was there the letter (which I couldn't read because it was in the old style German handwriting) but there was this document folded in half...you can barely see the crease in this old scan......from an old rather poor scanner I used to have. There was also the length of ribbon below.
I tried to buy the whole thing, but he wouldn't sell the letter and envelope.....he wanted it for his collection, and had just picked it up there for 1 mark; however, he sold me the document and ribbon for 1 mark......thus getting the letter and envelope for nothing.
The scan is not good, as I said, but it was the best I could get with my old scanner. The document is matted and framed.....you can see part of the matt. At the top of the document apparently written in pencil appears to me to say "Stalingrad 6. Januar". The stain on the signature appears maybe to be a blood stain.
I have tried to find the name "Werner Bachmann" among the RK lists, but have never found that name, or any record of him. Others have said it is phoney and I was taken. Maybe, but not by a very enterprising crook for 1 mark, since that was at the time a little less than 50 cents and I repro document sold for a couple of dollars then and the ribbon maybe a little more.
I cannot do better pictures than these old ones right now, because my stuff is still packed away due to work on the house.
What, if anything, can, or will, you tell me about this stuff.
