    Unknown DKiG Winner Waffen-SS

    Hello guys,

is it possible to identify this DKiG winner?

On the rear there is written: "Hauptsturmführer Fritz Blothe (right side) with a comrade from Austria ..."

Both are wearing the Army Flak Badge.

    Best regards,

    Joerg

Blothe was with SS Kavallerie but I don't recognize the GC.

Going by data in Mark's German Cross Holders book on SS-Kavallerie and from John Moore's Führerliste, a likelycandidate is Fritz Löschnigg. He had the right rank, was with the SS-Kavallerie Division, and was an Austrian. Mark's bio indicates he held the General Assault Badge and the Army Flak Badge, there's no mention of the Close Combat Clasp in Silver, but the other medals match.

Löschnigg won his German Cross on September 22, 1943, as a Hauptsturmführer, and then was away from the front during 1944. So the rank and timing seem right for this photo. It could be someone else, but this seems like a decent educated guess.

That is just a killer photo for so many reasons. Quality of photography is so good, i cannot tell if it is a candid or a studio pic....

Good research Marc! It's often possible to ID someone without knowing what he looked like.

Could be, though obvious away from the front may have been simply a friend. Too bad no sleeve insignia seen. Blothe was with Flak Abteilung "Ost" so I assumed he was later Kavallerie. The anti-aircraft component of the SS-Kavallerie Division initially was part of the rebuilt SS-Flak Abteilung “Ost” in combination with the Flak Kompanie remnants of Kampfgruppe “Zehender.“ SS-Flak Abteilung “Ost,” excluding a 2cm Batterie, was seconded to the Division at the end of August 1942 and began reforming at Debica in September.

Truly outstanding photo and interesting research being generated as well.

Just quoting a volume of "German Cross in Gold Holders of the SS and Police" as Marc also kindly credited.

I'd rather see another pic of the guy to confirm but for many simply nothing exists unless an original photo album appears.

I must have 12-15 similar with no ID, trying to confirm for years
