Very nice photo !! BTW is he wearing an Infantry Assault Badge???

Plus, black wound badge. He is probably recovering from an injury.

Sure looks like an IAB to me !!

Yes it a very nice photo! I agree that he was probably in a panzer grenadier unit. Officer school than transferred to a panzer unit. No cuff title, possible Das Reich?

Hes wearing the officer's quality peaked cap with silver cords, but holds the rank of a SS-Hauptscharführer, how was this permitted?

He (I might know the name) is an Standarten-Oberjunker (becoming NCO), therefore permitted to wear offc. items, like the cords, offc. belt, etc.

Keep in mind that there were almost no SS-Panzer units before the spring of 1942 (Totenkopf had a platoon of Panzer 38t in its Recon Battalion in 1940). The Waffen-SS men who became tankers were mostly former infantrymen (and artillerists, to a lesser extent). So it isn't unusual to see the IAB on the tunic of Waffen-SS Panzer soldiers.

BTW, I agree, the man is a Standartenoberjunker, a Junkserschule graduate on probation until his promotion to Untersturmführer.
