The Elbrushaus is the German name for the Russian hut 'Priut 11' (refuge of the 11). Priut 11, a mountain hut sometimes called the highest "hotel" in the world, was located on the slopes of Mount Elbrus,the highest summit in Europe...a grand, three-storied, metal-clad hut completed in 1939 at the site of the previous Priut 11. The design and construction of the hut was overseen by the architect and alpinist Nicolas Popov with the assistance of Ferdinand Kropf, an Austrian who settled in the Soviet Union and finally became the chief of the Soviet Rescue Services. The hut could accommodate one hundred and twenty visitors, had electricity, was double glazed and totally weather proof.

It was destroyed by fire in 1998, which started with an accidental ignition in the kitchen.

The 1986 date on the picture I linked has to be wrong- it's after the 1998 fire.

In 1909 the expedition climbers, led by Rudolph Leytsinger (the founder of the Caucasian Mountain Society) spent the night among stones at the place of future hotel
and wrote of the red paint on the rock - "Приют 11 (The Shelter 11)" (because their group consisted of 11 persons).
In 1929 this place was built a wooden hut, covered with iron.
In 1932 - the building of the barracks for 40 people. "Because the places for tents were not enough, sometimes they are placed directly on the flat roof of the barracks".
"Shoulder to shoulder," it was placed exactly four "tent."

Construction of the "Shelter 11" was made in 1937-39 years. According to the project of the climber-architect N.Popova was built
three-storey building with a rounded top, reminiscent of blimp.
The first floor (there is placed a kitchen, shower rooms and storage rooms) was built of stone.
The second and third floors - wood, insulated with special thermal insulation plates (there were rooms for 2-8 people, a dining room with 50 seats
and the "vip" numbers). The two upper floors and roof were covered with galvanized iron.
The hotel was a boiler house and power plant, operated central heating in the water - hot and cold water, drain.


The hotel was burning almost a day.
