So the advancing russians woult not enter "holy ground". It was not only the memorial for the victorius battle of Tannenberg of 1914, but also the grave of Generalfeldmarschall and Reichspräsident Hindenburg and his wife.

Other than removing the coffins of the Hindenburgs, the Wehrmacht did a lousy job of destroying it. I saw some pictures from 1947, showing that all the buildings were still there, and from the 50's and 60's as the bricks and window casings were removed over time for the local villages (and of course the Russians had to build a war monument from some of the bricks).
It wasn't until the 1980's that the Poles razed what little was left.

I also saw an interesting picture from about 1943 that showed that the Germans built a Stalag POW camp almost next door to the Tannenburg Memorial- the photo shows the Memorial buildings just beyond the Stalag fence.
