Almost: Studierter Ingenieur, means he has finished studiing, and is no longer a student.

      Ilmensee-Gebiete = area close to the Ilmen-lakes.

Here you find a list of about 12 soldiers KIA in the Ilmensee/Russia area - and you can see a pic of the Death Card/Totenzettel of all of them!

The first answer (by Cesky67) was correct. A stud.ing. is an undergraduate student of engineering.

The Latin Studiosus [abbreviated "stud."] is the traditional designation for all students undergoing studies. Those of higher semesters who are preparing for or currently undergoing their final exams are referred to as Candidatus [abbreviated "cand."] Following the "stud." or "cand" is the abbreviated designation of the student's field of study.

See here for a (German language) explanation of such student "titles":
          http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studentischer_Grad

...and here for an example of a present-day engineering student using this designation:
          http://www.mechbau.uni-stuttgart.de/...ple/thurm.html

"Uffz. d. LW." means "Unteroffizier der Luftwaffe".

He was an engineering student by civilian trade who was serving as a Luftwaffe NCO when he was killed.
