    Braunau Austria May 1945

Can anyone identify the camera or the pistol/pistol holster in the photograph? It was taken in Braunau, Austria after it was occupied by American forces in 1945 by a former Czech laborer. There maybe an American officer in the background.

I thought it might be a US Army M1911 .45 or a Polish Radom but wasn't sure. Does anyone know if that shoulder rig is US Army issue? The Czech gentleman who took the photo said he remembered an English speaking journalist in the area of the blown bridge over the Inn River, and I am trying to find out who that might have been. This guy has some kind of movie camera in his hand, and I was wondering also if anyone could tell what kind, type, it is. The granddaughter who sent me the picture {along with some others of the destroyed bridge} seems to think they are Czech partisans, but what would they be doing in Braunau at the end of the war unless they were former slave laborers? The guy with the movie camera evokes alot of questions. I don't think an armed journalist would be running around there in mufti at that time either.

Yes, I agree probably Polish Radom. Camera looks German to me. I have seen pics of kriegsberichterstatter using similar camera.

          Pistol/Holster Set-up

          Greg:

I don't know about the camera, but I think the weapon is a Canadian-made "Inglis" 9mm with a Canadian/British canvas holster. If you can get a hold of a good 'Handgun' book get a look at the "John Inglis Company" section....They used to make washing machines & refrigerators before the war & took on the government war manufacturing contract to make weaponry.

I would have to say the cameraman may be a Brit or Canadian?

Looks like he is wearing a typical 'Leather Jerkin' as well he has on a very typical if odd hat used by 'Brit' Labourers of the period.

I will have a look in a few books tonight If I can match up the face data and time to a Photo-team
