    U-Boat identification help needed...

    Hello,
this thread ic somehow connected with the previous here: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=560223 in which I wrote that this U-Boot is U-69, which now I think is wrong.

So, let's sit in our school again and study this one a bit.

    First page looks like this:

As you can see, in the text it's mentioned Kiel (there were few shipyards there), and the date 19. September 1940.
Now, at first I thought that this particular boat was U-69, as it was launched on that day, but later I compared the photos with the ones in the book The Laughing Cow by Jost Metzler and I found out that it was not that U-Boot.

What makes me believe this is not U-69 is the order of the officers on two photos. here is the one from the book:

and here are two from my set. All three photos have explanations about the differences:

Now, when I convinced myself that this was not U-69, I tried to identify the U-Boot and/or the commander(s), but unfortunately without success:

Here is something I believe is a kind of the emblem:

Here are drain holes which have made me think about this U-Boot as of Typ VIIC or similar ;-):

and here, at least, are the commanders on this commissioning event:

here in the middle I believe is the highest ranking officer:

to the left of him is the one which was ordering something from the tower (I'm not quite sure how the commissioning procedure was organized)

and here is the different set of crew, with almost the same persons:

Here is that officer, with some device tied to the tower fence:

Now I would like to investigate about this U-boot, with the help of more knowledgeable people from this great source of information.

This is just to note that on page http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...=149950&page=7

there is similar emblem like the one here above, on U-203 photo, so maybe someone could use that as a help.

    Thanks!

      OK, news again.

I found this text explaining the "Emblem" (which is not, obviously:
      Tactical
marks for Type VIIs originally consisted of four symbols – a circle, square, triangle
or two small triangles; they were white if the boat had been built by Friedrich Krupp
Germaniawerft or black if it had been built by Deutsche Werke.

      I found it here: http://www.artitec.nl/downloads/inst...at_colours.pdf , page 29

So, as the mark (not emblem any more ;-) ) is white, I found out that it has been built in F. Krupp Germaniawerft AG, Kiel.
        Here are U-Boots built there:

So, I cleared the list up to include only the ones which were built during 1940, and the result is:
          VIIBU-99 - U-102 4 boats 593 - 596 1937 - 1940
          VIICU-69 - U-70 2 boats 603 - 604 1938 - 1940
          VIICU-71 - U-72 2 boats 618 - 619 1939 - 1941
          VIICU-93 - U-98 6 boats 598 - 603 1938 - 1940
          VIICU-201 - U-212 12 boats 630 - 641 1939 - 1942
          VIICU-221 - U-232 12 boats 651 - 662 1940 - 1942
          VIIDU-213 - U-218 6 boats 645 - 650 1940 - 1942

Now the serach is a bit narrower, I hope.

The problem I see here is that none of those U-boots was commissioned nor launched in 1940.

              U-218 Launch: 05. Dec 41 / Comm: 24. Jan 42
              U-212 Launch: 11. Mar 42 / Comm: 25. Dec 42
              U-224 Launch: 05. May 42 / Comm: 20. Jun 42

Wow, a great find, even better than I initially thought.
And more valuable for me as a collector !!!!

                This is U-96.
Captain is Heinrich-Lehmann Willenbrock http://uboat.net/men/willenbrock.htm and there are two other U-boat aces on those photos:

The smal old looking man is Korvettenkapitän Richard Zapp http://uboat.net/men/zapp.htm
and in the back the one looks like Udo Heilmann http://uboat.net/men/commanders/441.html

                G-R-E-A-T !!!!!

Here I also want to thank collegues from http://ubootwaffe.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8040#8040
