    44. ID italy Monte Cassino 1943/1944, sherman tanks aso

    Hello

I want to show you a few nice pictures of an german soldier of the 44 ID Hoch und deutschmeister after Stalingrad. The pictures should be taken around 1943 / 1944 in italy close to monte cassino.
The soldier was armorer and did duty close to monte cassino togehter with the Fallschimrläger / paratroopers. This all was told his son from himself.

He also told his son that the german paras where a little bit crazy. As example he told that they come to him to get an MG 42, took ammunition and fired as long till the barrel was glowing. If the gun makes no problem, the took the gleming barrel out, gave the barrel to him back and took the gun with the words." this one is good, we take ist".
I dont know if this is a true story but it was told from him.

Maybe someone can help me, where the pictures where taken, and if those are really taken close to cassino aso.
There are around 80 pictures. Also landscape aso but also knocked out american sherman tanks aso.

Thanks for the help and enjoy the pictures.

    Best Buckeru

            Hello Buckeru!
In May 1944, during the last battle of Cassino, the Schwere Pz.Jager Abteilung 525 was attached to the 1st Fallschirmjäger Division and fought in the Liri Valley and at Aquino - Pontecorvo area, on the "Hitler Line". At that time, the 44 Division was part of the LI Mountain Corps along with 1 FJ Division. The 44 HuD suffering heavy losses during the fighting for the "Hitler Line" and the Melfa River againts Canadian soldiers

In the photo, you can see troops of the Westminster Regiment, 5th Canadian Armoured Brigade, posing on a abandon Nashorn TD near Pontecorvo, Italy, 26 May 1944 and another one destroyed near Melfa River

If you have other photos with landscapes, I can try to search exact locations

                    Hello,

some more photos from a FJ of the H.G.Div shoot in the vicinity of Monte Cassino...
On some landscape photos you can spot from the distance the abbey...
It's the same landscape that I see to the east when I drive on the Caserta-Rome highway...

                    Ciao...

Ok Buckeru...I can tell you something:

                      1) The Nashorn is in The Liri Valley, may 1944

                      2) The old Castle is 95% The Castle of Esperia (nearly 20 km west of Cassino), a little town on the Gustav Line, called "Rocca Guglielmina"

                      3) The big building in the Photo #5 naturally is not Monte Cassino, but the Administrative building of Frosinone, 50 km north of Cassino and 60 from Rome.

                      4) Soldiers and donkeys I think are in the area of Terelle / Belmonte, very close to Colle Belvedere, some km east of the Abbey

                      5) KO Shermans are I think in the Liri Valley too.
