Note the fellow on the right is wearing a Minesweepers Badge - definitely not a badge commonly seen in conjunction with a Sturmgeschutz uniform...

Rare combination indeed... Probably a late Pic, as many KM and LW Guys were sent to fill the Gaps within the Army. For some Years, I had the opportunity to have a Look at the reports of Exhumation of German Soldiers in the late 50' in my area, all of them KIA mid.Nov.1944. 40% of them wore LW or KM Identity discs, and a lot of KM and LW Insignias where found on the Bodies and listed with the Founds.... A rare Photo... for a common Situation !

Maybe it is not even that strange that he found himself in a STUG. He could have been a gunner on a small ship and so at least already knew how to handle a cannon. Surely wasn't a disadvantage when he later trained on the STUG gun (if he was indeed a gunner).

I posted this photo on another thread but thought it was appropriate here; it shows a German prisoner captured near Aachen. You will notice he has been awarded the KM E-Boat badge.

I wish the Minesweeper photo would have appeared larger in my post, but it seemed to have shrunk a bit upon posting (??). At any rate, "my" StuG man is clearly and unquestionably wearing a Minesweeper Badge...
