Me 109 Staffelzeichen Identifcation Assistance...

Would anyone possibly be able to positively identify this half-sunken Iron Cross Me 109 Staffelzeichen ???

What makes you think this is an ME 109 Abzeichen? I've never seen this one.

This photo is from a grouping of various Me 109 Staffelzeichen photos that is being broken up (surprise, surprise), hence the Me 109 in the title of this thread. Even if not 109 related (and I have no idea what Me 109 component - if even Me 109 at all - this insignia is on), the half-sunken Iron Cross insignia itself is quite intriguing...

With it being an EK immersed in water and a shield I was looking for Seenotstaffel Wappen, however can not find anything at moment......looks like it could be on a boat?

I think it's a vehicle or trailer. Petrol tanker maybe?

the small flag reminds me of a convoy flag (you remember those Ian)

if so Seenotstaffel 5 would make sense unless anyone knows what they had, Küstenflieger perhaps?

Doesn't appear to be a Seenotstaffel......still looks more like a boat to me rather than a vehicle.....yes remember the flags....yellow, red, green and blue if I remember correctly

Looks like the "Odd man out" in the grouping of Me 109 Staffelzeichen sale photos....hopefully both the Staffelzeichen - along with the "mystery" part it is painted on - can be identified....

I thought it looked similar to JG 5 "Eismeerjäger" Geschwaderwappen.......

Looking at Luftwaffe emblems 1939-1945 by Ketley & Rolfe, it looks like a mixture.
The under halve - the water, as in the JG.5 "Eismeer" and the German cross a little bit lower positioned than the one used on the Luftfeldpoststaffel unit shield.

Looks more like a piece of equipment from a patrol station......

The reason I asked is that obviously this Wappen is not on a 109, and, yes, I've never seen it. The fact that I have looked at hundreds of these over the past 35 years is obviously of no interest to you. So how about keeping the attitude to yourself.

It does look like it has a 'midnight sun' in the background behind the EK as well.


I'll have to scan through Mombeek's 4 volumes on JG5 and see if anything turns up.

Yes, you are right about that Simon, looking better at the photo now I can see that - the "midnight sun" is present there.

So what do we have here ?

I looked through everything I own and found nothing. There were similar unit insignia with water below sky and in one instance a polar bear straddling an iceberg over similar water. That logo was on the cowling of a Ju52.

Needless to say seems to be a unit which served in the far north (artic).

It does appear to be a photo of a petrol wagon but the 5 may refer to 5 staffel or 5th petrol wagon.

Interesting mystery keep the ideas coming.

No need to blow a Gasket, Vtwin. An affiliated Me 109 outfit or not, I posted only to get a positive ID...hundreds of us have seen hundreds of these also, but not this one....
