U 608.
Information taken from : U-Boat versus Aircraft, by Franks.

The escort carrier Card also had an Avenger aircraft damaged during an attack on U-608 on 13 October 1943. Kapitänleutnant Rolf Struckmeier’s U-608 was on the surface 600 miles north of the Azores and was found by Avenger “T9” of VC-9, flown by Lieutenant (jg) H. Fryatt.

Diving to attack, the U-boat opened up, its fire passing mainly below the TBF, but shrapnel from one exploding shell cut the hydraulic line for lowering the starboard landing wheel and also the manual release cable. As the Avenger roared over de boat, so it dived, Fryatt released a Mark 24 “mine” but without known results.

Returning to the carrier the damaged undercarriage was going to bring trouble so all other aircraft were landed on first. By this time it was almost dark and things were not helped by heavy sea running. Fryatt “pranged” the Avenger onto the deck, smashing into the island and colliding with a parked Avenger; a sailor was knocked overboard but later recovered.

Fryatt and his crew were not harmed and although his aircraft was badly mangled it was later repaired. Aboard a larger carrier it might well have been tipped overboard.<O</O

KTB U-608 reports:

Attack. Flak, hits observed on the aircraft, it begins burning.<O</O
Aircraft released a rocket which hits the water 50 metres in front<O</O
of the boat. Aircraft type Martlett. Immediately after passing over the <O</O
Boat (we) crash-dived”<O</O

There is no report of any smoke coming from the Avenger, so it was more than likely hydraulic fluid streaming from the severed line.

The “rocket” of course, was the acoustic torpedo.
