According to the pencil mark on the top right of the EK citation the man was on U-17. The signature of Dönitz is the stamped version and the signature on the letter belongs to Herbert Sohler who commanded the 7 Unterseebootsflottille.

          Notes for U-710
On 24th April 1943 206 SQN Fortress of 15th Grp CC RAF (FO R L Cowey) was covering convoy ONS-5 when at 1725 U-710 was sighted South of Vik, Iceland. It is thought that U-710 was headed for convoy HX234. U-710 fought back with flack but 6 D/Cs were dropped very accurately and Cowey went around for a second attack, after which the boat sank vertically leaving 25 men in the water, however nothing could be done for them. 49 men died with U-710.
