French LVF poster

Hi,
thanks Tony for pointing me those posters !
I can confirm that they are 100% ok ^_^
Very interesting infos :
- Giraudy is a well famous poster advertisement of Paris that is still working today, and is still the leader in France !
http://www.cbsoutdoor.fr/
We can see some scotch tapes at the back of the first poster.
- The poster was sent by post from the Giraudy headquarters in Les Champs-Elysées on September 30, 1942 to the Mayor of Longepierre, a city of Saône & Loire (30km south of Dijon).
Interesting is the fact that the "Légion Tricolore" was "created" by Jacques Benoist-Méchin, one of the minister of Pierre Laval in April 1942. On October 9 (less than 10 days after the sending of the posters), Benoist-Méchin resigned from his minister (Laval and him had an argument, and the Germans didn't want to accept the Légion). In my opinion, those two posters did not had the time to see the light of the day on the city of Longepierre at all ! The publication order was probably quickly resigned too...
Those posters are interesting, but unfortunately as the unit never really existed people are usually not very interested by them. The LVF and Waffen-SS posters are very expensive, those ones are worth 50 to 100 Euros each i think.
The "Légion Tricolore" was a missed opportunity by non-occupied France government (Vichy - Maréchal Pétain) to get back the "Légion des Volontaires Français (contre le bolchévisme)" military unit into his own sphere of influence. They wanted also to ad soldiers from the dominions, to fight (maybe) in North Africa against the Allied Forces (Nota : not to be confused with the "Phalange Africaine", which was a french ersatz unit who fighted in North Africa).
The "LVF", founded during the summer of 1941, was quickly infiltrated by members of the PPF (Parti Populaire Français, main collaborationist party in occupied France - chief : Jacques Doriot, who like Léon Degrelle went to the front). Between 1941 and 1944, the "LVF" was fully controlled by the PPF.
Therefore Vichy tried to get back that military unit (even if the "fights" were not very glorious - partisan's war...). But the Germans understood that an " official french unit", even under the german command could fight... against them if the Allied forces started the liberation of Europe.
This is why the SS-Brigadeführer Krukenberg (german chief inspector and "real" chief of the "Charlemagne") clearly warned the french SS that he couldn't accept any political fights in the "Charlemagne" (like it was in the LVF for example).

Thanks Vince.
Even if they are not worth much they are still bright and attractive designs.
With the historical info on the back you would NOT be able to have them linen backed for preservation.
However, I've seen double sided posters displayed in double sided plexiglass frames so both sides can be viewed if you turn it over, but it's a rather expensive option.
Sorry just thinking out loud.

Hi,
as i'm telling people for months, you will always find auctions with very high ending prices... but also bargain ones.
In every hobby you will find people that are ok to pay the price of an item x10, sometimes even x100. The problem is that you can't say "this poster sold for 1000 Euros, so each similar poster is worth 1000 Euros (at least)".
We are talking of items printed to thousand of copies, sometimes even thousand of copies. Small french collaborationist partys printed flyers during the war up to 100000 copies... Even if 90% are destroyed or lost, you will still have near 10000 (potential) copies on the market.
Auction houses are heavily promoted by the medias. This is the more easiest way for rich people to find what they want. Far more easier than searching for years on flea markets and internet the items you want.
Auction houses results are irrational : check HH61, and you will find an SS lot with four uncommon SS booklets (including "Auch Du") who sold for 1000 Euros.
The NEXT lot was for one (1 !) single "Auch Du", missing a few pages. This item sold to 1000 Euros ! So it is false and unfair to say "Auch Du is 1000 Euros worth" when another bidder (from France ) was able to purchase it for... 250 Euros (1000 / 4).
For french posters, i can find you some mad collectors who will be ready to pay x10 the price. But i'm also able to find you people who find similar ones for 1/10 of the price.
Berliner Auktionshaus sold recently "Vlamingen Op!" (SS flemish booklet) for... 900 Euros (+ 30% of fees). This booklet is usually sold online in excellent condition for 100 Euros.
"La SS t'appelle" (french "Dich Ruft Die SS") was sold during HH61 for +600 Euros (+ 25% of fees). One copy is very good condition sold for 350 Euros one week ago on Ebay.
The SS poster (with a red stripe at the bottom) sold here on the WAF and on Rask between 150 and 250 Euros. The same poster sold for hundred of Euros/dollars on other (specialized) websites.
