nothing in the 39 or 44 rangliste, but as he is an older WWI veteran he might well have been a reservist.

What is the connection to GD? Also, any idea if he was supposed to be a major during the war, or pre-war\WWI?

Connection to GD is his Ärmelband ... i read Gr (ß??) and the Schirmmütze with the scrull

The photo shows a pre-war allgemeine-SS Scharführer, nothing at all to do with GD. If this guy was a major then i'd take a guess that was during WWI.

For GD the cuff title is on the wrong arm! As Simon has mentioned, it is Allgemeine-SS.
