Second-from-the-left looks like SA-Obergruppenführer Hans von Tschammer und Osten...at least to me. And if it is, then this photo dates no later than the winter of 1942-43, because Reichssportführer Tschammer died of pneumonia on March 25, 1943.

    Hope this is helpful,

    Br. James

Thanks, Michal -- how can you be so sure it isn't Tschammer? Please help us out here.

It isn't Tschammer simply because it doesn't look like him. Even approaching his later years, he was never this heavy.

Thanks very much for explaining your point of view. I don't agree with you, but that's OK!

You have been the contrarian on other identifications before. I would ask you to provide evidence, preferably photographic evidence, that supports your contention that this is Tschammer .

Thanks, Gerdan, for the Tschammer links; very nice, and I've seen them all before. And thanks for your response, Ramon, and I certainly agree that I have previously disagreed with others as to photo identification...what can I say? I really don't expect everyone to agree with me, but that's the way life goes! Many of the questions presented in each thread on the W.A.Forum have drawn differences of opinion, and I have never been constrained to accept anyone else's opinion simply because it disagrees with my own; there should be more to it than that!

Your comment that "It isn't Tschammer simply because it doesn't look like him" seems far from convincing, at least to me, and I say this with respect for your knowledge and study of our subject. I think it does look like him: the person in the photo appears to be wearing the SA uniform and rank which Tschammer held toward the end of his life, which is part of what I based my identification upon. And the person in the photo does not look to me to be described as "he was never this heavy;" indeed, I don't think this person is "heavy" to begin with. But that is my opinion and, lacking more conclusive reasoning, I feel no need to change it.

As I said above, I submit this note with honest respect, and I hope to receive the same respect from those with whom I disagree. In past instances, I have been convinced to re-think an opinion I initially stated, having come to a better mind through the presentation of hard facts. I am willing to reconsider this ID as Tschammer if anyone can offer more concrete information; our common goal is to reveal the truth. I have never claimed infallibility -- and I have yet to find anyone else who has attained that exalted height!

                  With warmest regards,

                  Br. James

I suppose I was a bit tweaked by your steadfast opinion on the id of an image of Erich Hartmann that was clearly incorrect so that when I came to this thread with a rather jaundiced perspective. To date, I haven't seen a retraction of that misidentification. Perhaps you still believe that that image is indeed Hartmann.

In any event, you have offered nothing in support of your Tschammer contention other than that the fellow is a Gruppenführer. I, at least, offered a physical anomoly that supports my opinion. No more, no less.

I'll let this go now and wish sunny climes to all. Good wishes to you and yours, Br. James

Thank you, Ramon. We'll agree to disagree. I'm sure none of us has time to argue just for the sake of argument, nor does that accomplish our common goal. All good wishes to you, and I'm sure we'll be in touch soon again.

There's just no resemblance at all. Von Tschammer und Osten was much smaller, the nose is shaped differently, as are the ears. And the statement "he doesn't look like Tschammer" actually sums it all up pretty well, in my opinion.

I think someone needs to check his prescription.

Dear Br. James, Please do not include me in your 'all of us' pot. I know whereof I speak. You remain the one who has not presented any valid information that supports your view that this is Tschammer other than the specious argument of the man being a Gruppenfuehrer. That is a very weak bit of support. You remain bent on believing what you believe. You're not going to change. sigh.....
