KM Officer Photo- Real or Fake?

    Hi all,

I recently won this photo on eBay. Currently I am waiting for it to arrive. I know NOTHING about photos. Is there a way to tell if it is an original?

Here is the "story" in the eBay listing. The seller has a number of these types of photos for sale.

You are bidding on a WWII German Navy Kriegsmarine RK Officer Winner Photo. This photo comes from Russian captured German film. It was printed by the Russians near the end of the war and so is an original WWII photo, done so for intelligence and historical purposes to serve the Russian military officer training academies and schools. It has been filed away in the Ukraine for decades. Mid war photo with no date on the reverse, estimating around 1942 time period or earlier. Great shot of a Knight's Cross Winner, Kriegsmarine officer (probably a Wolfpack U-Boat commander) of whose name escapes me, with said medal at his throat, wearing class A uniform in pose. I was trying to pay someone to identify this officer for me, but I've not heard back from them so will start the auction with out the identity, hopefully they'll come through as a reliable authority on this. Heavy hitter RK winner here; fantastic and rare shot! Super composition! Take a look and see what you think. Very poignant pic here of WWII history. Very nostalgic, and personal photo. Don't miss out on such a rare great war pic! Original WWII photo and it is in really good condition, very crisp, measuring about 5" x 3 1/4", (no glue marks, paper fibers/fragments on reverse). I am depicting several enlarged angles here so that you may get a better idea of the photo's composition. We pack well and ship fast! Good luck on the bidding!

    All opinions greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks
    Pierce

    It's an old fake.

    1. Contrast of the obverse: bad or very bad, it looks like the photo is printed from some book, newspaper, etc.
    2. Cutting: here you can see a little bit modified "Russian archive" fakes cutting.
    3. Photo paper: mostly "Спецфонд МВД УССР" stamp, sometimes Agfa, Agfa-Lupex, Agfa-Brovira...

You can search on this forum - there are many threads about this type of fakes.

Many thanks for this information. The photo arrived today and sure enough the Russian stamp etc was on the reverse. Back to the seller it goes.

          Kind regards
