I think - due other photographs and place description - that it should be Lago Maggiore . But I would like to have confirmation .

            LAH Italy 1943

Can you tell the unit from any vehicle markings? Types of vehicles. Albert Frey led a reinforced Regiment in Ilstre ( sp) on anti Partizan duty after the rest of the division left for Russia.

On the photographs mostly are to be seen are LEITHE , BREMER and SCHULZ . Also sometimes WANDER and NEITZEL.

-- The LAH symbol is also hardly seen on the vehicle on the photograph.

From what I've found on different sources and got currently NARA research on them (two of them: Schulz and Leithe).

                Case Nr. 685
Crime Category: Other Mass Extermination Crimes
                Accused:
Krü., Hans Willi Walter Proceeding suspended
                Lei., Ludwig Otto Proceeding suspended
                Röh., Hans Friedrich Proceeding suspended
Schn., Karl Reinhold Herbert Proceeding suspended
                Schu., Oskar Proceeding suspended
                Court:
                LG Osnabrück 680705
                BGH 700317
Country where the crime was committed: Italy
Crime Location: Arona, Baveno, Meina, Mergozzo, Orta, Stresa
                Crime Date: 4309
                Victims: Jews
                Nationality: Italian
                Agency: Waffen-SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler
Subject of the proceeding: Arrest and execution of a total of 22 Italian Jews in several actions at the Lago Maggiore

Published in Justiz und NS-Verbrechen Vol. XXX
The LSSAH or parts of it were, according to the
                http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... 1SSPGD.htm ,
around Lagio Maggiore in September 1943 (to disarm the Italians).
It seems they (SS-Pz.-Gren.-Rgt. 2) committed a massacre in Meina on the Lagio Maggiore when they killed 20 Jews: "Bereits am 15. September hatten Angehörige des SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiments 2 in Meina am Lago Maggiore etwa 20 Juden aufgegriffen und erschossen."
Maybe your pic shows members of SS-Pz.-Gren.-Rgt. 2 around September 15th, 1943?
