Arrived in the mail today with a few other items. There's things I like (the signature & stamp) and things I don't like (the paper is very thin & the way it's folded). Any comments or feelings on it?

Looks fine to me Hank. The signature is Wagner, a bit of a history to him too. Amongst other things he was heavily implicated in the 20th July bomb plot due to which he commited suicide.

Doesn't look right, I'm afraid...

There are a number of suspect points on this item, looks like maybe a calligraphy practitioner put it together. You'll notice the inconsistency in letter size and configuration, and the lack of spacing in the recipient's last name. This also doesn't match the usual KVK docs, and lettering swirls like these are generally not to be found in award docs. I could be wrong, but....

Those are actually a couple of concerns I had too...although there are plenty of original documents found where the last name isn't spaced. And the uniqueness of the document (appearing like calligraphy) was what drew me to it in the first place. The paper looks / feels / smells old enough. And the signature looks very, very good, which is one reason I decided to take a chance on it.
It'll go in my "suspicious, but not definitely bad" file.

Out of all the award docs the humble KVKII m S is the one which turns up in an almost infinite number of styles. Had someone wanted to fake this it would have been easier to have used a blank of the regular style. The unit is a genuine unit, the stamp, rank, appointment and name of the signatory all match up including for the given date. There is also nothing wrong with the way the recipient's name and rank has been typed. Another thing in it's favour is the fact that the unit isn't one of the exotic, rare or sought after ones.

There is an example of a KVKII doc signed by Wagner on page 191 of Volume 1 of Forman's. It isn't the same style as this one but at the same time it is an unusual design. The stamp and signature are the same
