    Panzer meyer photo

The background info on this thread makes the Panzer Meyer photo even more interesting, and the other LAH photos posted on here are just as interesting, to say the least!!!

    Best regards,

    Tom

I am always amazed at just how utterly beaten to hell Meyer is in this series. When you contrast the image with a well rested Meyer you can really see how hard he pushed himself.

Nice find on that initial photograph.

I am not sure who he is but he shows up in Normandy again. This is from the series taken during the HJ award ceremony. You see that Meyer is still wearing this favorite Crusher of his.

The fifth man is Karlheinz Prinz. The large man in a couple of photos is Franz "Steineck." He was an original member of the LAH back in 1933, when he still had the Polish last name of Szeponeck (or similar spelling).

He "Germanized" it around 1937, as did other officers such as Franz Lang, who later commanded SS-Feldersatz Bataillon 11 (I've forgotten his original last name). Most famously, Erich von Lewinski used the family name of his aunt's husband, von Manstein, after being adopted by their family as a child.

This same thing went on in Estonia, in the opposite way, where many men Estonian-ized their names, such as Harald Raibach, who won the Knight's Cross as Harald Riipalu.

I should mention, Steineck was one of the first LAH artillery-men. As an Oscha. around 1935 he was in charge of a platoon of Infantry Guns, and then gradually moved up to the full artillery arm. He commanded schwere SS-Artillerie Abteilung 101 at the time of the Normandy photo, and during the campaign took command of SS-Panzerartillerie Reg. 1. he held brief temporary command of LAH during the Falaise breakout, when Teddy Wisch was wounded and before Wilhelm Mohnke took over.

Does anyone have any idea what colour the piping would be on Meyer's crusher?,i read he was a member of the LAH recon early in the war and i'm wondering if that is the same crusher he wore then and during the battle of Kharkov, it may have been golden yellow? TIA.
