Post Card Adolf Hitler - ?

It may surprise you but my guess is that this photo was taken sometime in 1933. Why? There are certain elements of Hitler's uniform that were in fairly constant flux, as illustrated by viewing an entire set of the books titled "Reichstagung in Nürnberg" -- 1933 through 1938. In 1939 Hitler made a major switch in his attire to look more 'military' than political, and this was the advent of his use of a double-breasted blazer jacket instead of his PL tunic and replacing the long-standing NSDAP armband with a gilt eagle on his left sleeve. So obviously this photo is prior to early/mid-1939. Next comes the question: is he wearing his Golden Party Badge? Answer: no. While the GPB was official for wear ever since October of 1933, Hitler never wore his until 1937. So this photo must be prior to 1937. Then there is the matter of Hitler's cap. The cap in your photo appears to have no cockade or oakleaf wreath on the capband. Hitler wore such a cap with plain capband until 1938, when he first appears wearing a Heer-style cockade and oakleaf wreath in the front center of his capband. So again, this photo must be prior to 1938. But the give-away for me was his belt buckle. From the pre-Chancellor days of the Kampfzeit, Hitler always wore the solid belt buckle of the SA/PL and the Sam Browne strap with his PL Traditions Brown Shirt rig. But at the 1933 Reichsparteitag he is seen wearing both that early rig on certain occasions and also the new version of the PL uniform with jacket-style tunic as well as the Brown Shirt. But in 1933 he continued to wear the SA/PL solid belt, just as he is wearing in your photo; from 1934 onward Hitler shed the sold belt buckle in favor of the open double-claw style, which he continued to wear through 1938.

Certainly a long-winded answer and I hope it's helpful to you, your research and your collecting! Best wishes,

    Br. James
