Braided cord hanging from epaulet

This is probably a stupid question but what is the significance of the braided cord hanging from the shoulder-tab into the pocket? Both of these soldiers are members of the Croatian Inf.Rgt.369, both with the rank of Gefreiter, however, one is an infantryman, the other an artilleryman.
