    Award-Documents Flak Italy/Normandy

    hey guys,

this nice little lot arrived some minutes ago!

grouping of an nco of flaksturmregiment 53 (mot)! document for flakkampfabzeichen, given on the southern front, and doc for ic2, given in normandy (i guess falaise-poket). there are also two papers which say that the awards were send to the soldiers family!

    i really love the ic2-doc!!

    best regards,

    matthias

Great set and nice signature from Wolfgang Pickert. His story is very interesting. He commanded the 9th Flak Division at Stalingrad and was sent out of the Kessel in January, 1942 to personally report on the situation and state of the 6th Army. He was awarded his RK at the time as well. Although he knew the situation at Stalingrad was hopeless, he insisted on returning to his command. He wrote what he thought were his final letters home and boarded a plane destined for Pitomik. The plane was unable to land howver, as the airfield had just been overrun by Soviet troops.

I think you're right about the Falaise connection given the date of this doc. Those 88s were pretty important in holding the gap open for escape.
